No good deed.

"No good deed goes unpunished, no act of charity goes unresented." -Wicked.

The other day when I was in a disagreeable mood, I couldn't help but recall these lyrics from the masterful musical, Wicked. The lyrics really made me sit and ponder whether every good deed does eventually get resented in some way or another, and wind up causing harm rather than good.

What if every good thing we do intentionally, ends up just being something that we use to draw good attention to ourselves instead of being something that was originally supposed to do some good for other people? And of course there is always a good and a bad kind of attention. And when people are getting a lot of good attention, there is always someone with their toes stuck in some evil goo trying to bring bad attention to the good people. Still with me? So then it would seem, if these lyrics are to be assumed correct, that every good thing we do for others will somehow be twisted and turned a different way, and made out to be something bad; totally defeating the purpose of the good deed itself. Well, if that is the case, then why not just stop doing good deeds altogether? Why not just become WICKED?

I think that is where the confusion resides. That is where I think that the truly good can see past the bad attention and whole heartedly believe in continuing to do good even if some bad does rise from it; versus the evil cannot see past what is good for themselves and therefore never do anything good for other people.

So maybe no good deed goes unpunished, but in the end, you still did a good deed, and that is what should be remembered.

Just some thoughts I thought I would share... gave me some new ideas for posts revolving around quotes from musicals too...

'til next time,
XOXO, B
